What Is (Age-Related) Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease where the macula becomes damaged. This crucial and delicate structure at the back of your eye and the center of your retina is responsible for central vision, color vision and fine details. Damage to the macula can result in irreversibly impaired eyesight. There are two different types of macular degeneration: dry and wet. They both cause visual distortion, the difference is how. In dry macular degeneration waste products (cause drusen) build up in the macula. In wet macular degeneration is caused by leaky blood vessels at the macula. There is no treatment for dry AMD. Wet AMD often requires injections into the eye to preserve vision. Macular degeneration typically starts off as dry, only later, in about 10% of cases progressing to wet. Regular eye exams allow us to identify this condition early and ensure if it does progress to the wet form, we can get you the proper treatment as soon as possible.

By combining retinal photos (which we take on every patient) and special 3D scanning of the macula (called optical coherence technology or OCT) we are able to detect AMD early and customize an AMD treatment plan especially for your needs.
