Columbia (Nifong) Eye Care Services

At our Columbia eye care center, we’re here to make incredible care accessible to the community, with all the eye care services you need for great vision. You can trust our years of experience and personal care to keep your eyes healthy and seeing great!

Comprehensive
Eye Exams

During our thorough eye exams, our doctors use advanced diagnostic imaging to gain a complete picture of your eye and its health — and then explain your eye health to you in straightforward language, so you can make informed decisions. We use that information to give you a precise vision prescription and to stay ahead of any potential issues with your eyesight.

Glasses &
Frames

Our office features a huge selection of eyeglasses from brands you know and trust, like Nike and TOM FORD®, and dependable frames that will keep you seeing clearly. Our opticians take the time to talk through how you use your eyes every day before they help you choose a pair for your lifestyle fashion, so you can trust you’ll love how well you see and how good you look.

Eye Disease
Management

Our eye doctors are trained and experienced in managing and treating a variety of conditions, including dry eye, glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic eye diseases. Our team will craft a personalized treatment plan that meets your specific needs, and helps you maintain your vision uninterrupted for long-term clarity.

Cataract
Surgery

Cataracts are an extremely common condition where the eye’s lens gets cloudy with age, causing your vision to become blurry. The only way to correct your vision is by removing cataracts through surgery, and our trusted surgeons use their years in the field and advanced technology to restore — or even improve — your eyesight.

LASIK & Refractive Surgery Co-Management

If you’re interested in corrective vision surgery such as LASIK, our team is ready to empower your surgeon with all your information for a successful surgery. We’ll work with your surgery team so you can rest assured that they’ll know your eyes, and what they need, just as well as we do!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you take my insurance?

Most likely! We accept a wide range of medical and vision plans. Depending on why you’re being seen, your exam will either be billed through your medical or vision insurance.

Young, healthy, and just need new glasses? Your exam will likely be billed to your vision insurance. Diabetic eye exam, experiencing new floaters, or have cataracts? These are medical conditions and your exam will be billed through your medical insurance.

Here is a list of medical and vision insurances we take. Call the office if you have questions on if we take your specific plan.

Vision: VSP, NVA, EyeMed, Vision Care Direct Medical: United Health Care, BCBS, Medicare, Cigna, Essence Healthcare,
Healthlink

**For the specific lists of vision and medical insurances, the above list is for Keene, Nifong and Macon

Moberly: Medical list is the same, vision list add Avesis

Fulton: Medical list is the same, vision list add Vision Benefits of America

Ashland: Medical list is the same, vision list add Spectera

California: Medical list is the same, vision list add Spectera, March Vision, Envolve

Will my eyes be dilated?

It depends! Dilation is an important part of checking your eye health. We typically dilate all new patients, as well as those with diabetes or high myopia, every year. Others may need it less often, depending on their risk factors.

We also take widefield retinal screening photos (Optos) on every patient. These images are invaluable for tracking changes year to year – but they aren’t a replacement for dilation when a closer look is needed.

When should I bring my child in for an eye exam?

We recommend their first eye exam be between 6-12 months old, the next at age 3, and then again before starting kindergarten. Once in school, children should have yearly checkups to help make sure their vision stays on track – especially as they grow and learn.

If your child wears glasses, has a medical condition like diabetes, or you’ve noticed any changes in their vision or behavior, more frequent exams may be needed.

All of our doctors see kids, but Dr. Liepins-Masek (Keene), Dr. Byrd (Ashland and California), and Dr. Masek (Fulton and Keene) particularly enjoy treating kids and are a great option if you’re not sure which doctor to see.

When's the soonest I can get in for an appointment?

You can check our online scheduler for real time availability! Some locations and doctors book out further, so try a few different locations to find the earliest openings.

* If you’re experiencing a new or urgent problem (new floaters, loss of vision, pink eye, etc.) call the office directly so we can get you in sooner – these problems shouldn’t wait! This online scheduler is intended for your regular, comprehensive exam only

Why did you bill my medical insurance for my exam?

We billed your medical insurance because your exam involved a medical issue, such as dry eye, cataracts, diabetes, or other eye health concerns. Unlike other specialties that only bill one type of insurance (like medical at a primary care office or dental at the dentist), optometry can bill either your vision or medical insurance depending on the reason for your visit.

Can you e-mail me a copy of my contact lens/eyeglass Rx/receipt/visit notes?

Yes! The easiest way to get the records you need is to send us a message through the form on the Contact Us page of our website stating exactly what you need, and we can email it to you.

How much is a self-pay exam?

A self pay eye exam is $135

What is a contact lens consult charge?

A contact lens consult covers the part of your exam focused specifically on contact lens wear. It includes evaluating the health of your eyes to ensure they’re still healthy enough to safely wear contacts, checking the fit of your lenses, providing trial lenses if you’re switching brands, and any short-term follow-ups to make sure your new lenses are working well for you.
